Thank God for that-stripping a motor down to find nothing wrong with it would be soul destroying.
As for the rubber chain guide causing this is weird. Mine would do it in any gear, but always when accellerting. Spent ages buggering about with the carb, using fuel cleaners etc., convinced it was a fuelling problem. Often the cheapest fix works.
