50000 km MZ 1000 S :D

Hi!

The biggest german motorbike-magazine "MOTORRAD" carried out a 50000 km endurance-test with a MZ 1000 S. The result is brilliant! All technical components are in a fantastic condition. All motor parts are almost like new and ready for further long life. They've written, the MZ motor is almost wearfree.

They had only a small problem with the gearbox and a small rip in the exhaust.

What issue is it? That will be a "must get" issue......We'll never get that kind of information from any of the rags over here! Maybe someone would be willing to translate it for the few of us english only speaking enthusiasts???

OK... I'll try to translate some important informations. I really hope, it is understandable..... I'm sure, my former english-teacher would hate me for this translation.

First of all... the problems. After 18870 km the gearbox was out of function. It's was not a big problem and it was not known before. So they think, it was a individual case. After 49310 km they changed a ventilation-valve, because the air-filter was oily. At 28268 km and 50551 km the exhaust system got two little rips. OK.. that's all.

Now the positive informations. They dismantled the motor and checked all parts for wear. They found out, all parts are in a such good condition, that it would be possible to use all parts again. No part has reached the wear limit. Some motor-parts, for example the camshaft, crankshaft, the bearings of the connecting rod, the pistons etc. are in such a good condition, that the wear is not measurable. Also the clutch and the gear wheels are absolutely ok after the test. The compression of the motor is always at least 15 bar=217.56 psi !!!

The magazine used 8 bikes for the 50000km endurance-tests in the past, but the MZ is worn out least. All in all, the result is much better than the results of Honda VFR, BMW 1200 GS, Suzuki V-Strom, Kawa Z 1000, H.D. V-Rod, KTM 950 and Ducati 999.

The editor were not very friendly to MZ in the past, but they were very satisfied with this bike and they've written: "MZ must survive!". They have made a very good bike with a bullet-proof engine".

I think, it is a big success for MZ and I really hope, they'll find a way to make the US-guys happy in the future.

the exchange rate and the cost of making the bikes in germany
will force them to design the bikes in germany and build them
in other countrys with a high value placed on overaul QUALTY CONTROL

as for other bikes my rt125 is not for sale or trade

i like the moto guzzi breva 750 but about 50hp would be better than
the 41 42 listed as i have a r75/5 motor that does 50 hp
and its a bit underpowered when flying the I 79 interstate past pittsburgh PA

Well that is good to hear......and makes buying one of the 1000s' now even more of a bargain than before. A quality European bike for around $9000 (as of latest sighted listings) If it were any other brand of bike with those kind of reviews they would be selling like hotcakes over here I'm sure....That the magazine is'nt on MZ's payroll lends definate unbiased fact and credibility to the article. Can't say the same for some of the drivel we get spoon fed here!

I still shake my head and shrug my shoulders when thinking about their failure in the U.S. market....."I believe" they should have entered this market by adding more exotic parts such as Ohlins suspension, trick magnesium bits, carbon fiber, OZ or Marvic wheels etc..something along those lines.....and started with an initial small batch of 20 or less....The bike could very easily have gone the "Exotica" route, and I believe they would have sold better.... It still could!!! People I run into that show any interest in my 1000 are typically hard core motorcycle enthusiasts that don't ride Japanese mainstream stuff... They are definately a different, "appreciative" crowd. That's what I see at least.........

i have been pleased with all the german bikes i have owned
my problem is they have stopped importing every german brand i have ever owned but bmw

I have owned a few European motorcycles and the 1000S rates with the best of them. In terms of maintenance it is right at the top. In terms of value I think it is one of the best deals on the market. The transmission is the smoothest shifting I have owned. Styling is a personal preference but from the comments i receive it must be acceptable. It seems from the information from the German publication the insides are as good or better than the outside. I told my wife that this was going to be my last motorcycle and it may very well be.

There are also other tests (unfortunately in German) on the MZ Homepage of different Magazines. The result is almost the same: great motorbike without any flaccidities, a very individual style and classiness. So buy one as long as you get one.

The news from germany doesnt' sound good

some thing in the 450 to 700 cc class with super attention to build quality
a basic daily driver to build a customer base in the hard core basic daily driver type rider and make them avalible in the usa maybe one dealer in the east and if you want one order it but make sure there is no back order on any parts.....this was the killer here i was 106 days getting a starter freewheel for my rt125 via the importer

but no stupid stuff like the sprockets only fit the 125cc bikes no other brands
and the rt125 and saxon tour front brake lever only is used on them
and no other bike brands .....brake lever is a crash part and should not be Unobtainium.......it makes it to costly for a dealer to stock parts if everything only fits one model

Yes, the 1000 is a great bike. When I had my demo, it was bullet proof. I've been talking to alot of people I used to work with at mz and It doesn't look good. They have lost Millions of dollars . The brand isn't going away for now, but I can't see germany around long. The 1000 engine design is up for sale. Don't see MZ back in the USA for a long time
