Is the manual wrong or am I going insane? (has been an exceedingly long day and the bike is still in bits Crying or Very sad ).............surely the open and closed (on and off) positions are the other way round!!
Rotate the lever away from you (anti-clockwise) pulls the cable to open the choke, against the spring behind the choke plunger in the carb Confused

Its the way you say on my bike (top towards you with chike off), but the swirchgear is different, so maybe the choke operates the other way with this switchgear fitted.

both my rt125 and 1995 saxon tour use the same choke setup
as in your picture and there is a part inside that if not correct
the unit will move but not work the choke in the carb
on mine it is choked when the top is rotated forward
or anti clockwise looking at handlebar from the left side
it does not seem to be user friendly as mine on both bikes
is not very easy to work
part number is 9635245000 both bikes

also in some parts books they call the choke cable the "starter cable"

I had the same problem; the manual is wrong. Confused the hell out of me too for a while.

just to add... regardless of the manual or any other input. Whatever direstion "pulls" the cable is what will activate the choke, any choke.

oh! Really. No wonder I was confused.
It's crap, anyway. Like David says, it doesn't work well; it's stiff, and it's fiddly. I took mine off - the plastic thing on the handlebars and the cable, and cut a cable tie to fit into the plunger where the cable nipple goes. But I've got a Yamaha XT600 plunger assembly coming - with the normal knob pull/push plunger. I got BSA Regal to get it for me while I was ordering other stuff from them instead of bothering with the local dealer.
I can add my voice to all the praise for BSA Regal / Phil - it's good to get good service.
