Hi everyone.
Now I have my carbs sorted on my Baggy, I am thinking of carrying out a few mods. One mod that is mentioned a lot is to drill holes in teh air filter box. Just where are you guys putting these holes?
Any ideas would be welcome.

| Keith I put 2 x 22 mm holes on each side , just above the seat line, so that all the crud stays out. I thought if I put them at the front or back they would get sprayed with muck( although my mate suggested rigging up some sort of ram-air with some ducting etc), so setled for having them just out of sight..I think you could put more if you wanted , but personally I think this is a big improvement and the 4 seem adequate . |

All I did on mine is remove that top seal that goes between the seat and the air box. Not sure if it is in my head but it seems to have made a difference.

| I accidently posted this question in another forum here. I have seen air box mods for various bikes that use small diameter black plastic "gromets" wit black plastic screening of the openings. Does anyone know where these can be purchased Thanks |

Check out marine suppliers or RV dealers both of those industries make such things......If you get stuck I can always send you some picts from some of my suppliers.....
Hey Sean, could you comment on airbox mods and pulling off the gasket etc......I know you haven't touched yours at all ?? also you have tested the airbox and found a vacum build up because of the design !!! I'm gonna start on mine next

| Before I drilled mine the bike backfired a lot on the overrun and was very weak on acceleration. The new can and the holes have sorted it out a treat. I didn't bother with trying to find the little mesh grommets as the location of the holes is behind the side panel , just below the seat line. Unless you are going to do some serious offroading I can';t see there being much of a problem ( the crud still has to get past the filter to do any harm) |

uni makes the vent grommets, they can be ordered at any motorcycle store.
I checked the air box for negative pressure at WOT, was less than 1 inch of mercury. did not feel mods were necessary. I think air box mods add "seat of the pants" performance on the baggy, due to the increase in intake noise. My 2 cents (or pence)

There is a really neat Baghira air box modification to install an auto air filter project on the RVB web site: http://members.tripod.com/roy_bertalotto/id25.htm. I would probably take on the project if I could get a scaled template for the cutouts.
He has a custom nice fork brace as-well. |

Your last post clears things up a bit. The first post on this thread confused me a bit, I was trying to understand where you could drill some holes above the seat line of the air filter box as stated in your first post

Maybe I'm just cookie....but, when you put a free flowing exhaust on a bike it requires more fuel in the mixture right ??? When you increase air into the airbox you also need to richen up the mixture.... with what you have done, your bike should be running way too lean and popping badly on deaccel....also poor accel.... When my exhaust was put on when the bike was new, the dealer claimed to rejet (he lied) so my bike pops alot... I am taking my bike to a Dyno shop and have it done right for me because I really believe its running lean.......am I nuts or what ???
If you had that kind of success then I'm getting out the drill and putting holes in that thing as we speak

A while back I read an article in the BMWMOA that suggested using small K&N filters the size of a U.S Silver dollar. This helped rides of the BMW K bike get more air. What was needed to do the job was removing the airbox, drilling holes with a drill bit the size of the filter the some how using an adhesive to keep them in place. Just make sure you drill the holes in a smart location, preferably before the main filter. This mod I believe will solve the "muck" issue.

I agree with you on the theory, but my bike is definitely stronger now,no popping and better acceleration, and seems to be running fine as regards mixture. |
