Saturday 19th Feb and after some local pub food team Miller arrived at Foxholes Mx track, Row Immediatley disappears on his BMX bike to survey the track whilst Dad Unpacks the van and gets the bedding sorted out. By 19:00 its starting to get seriously cold and the hardy soul,s who are staying overnight are huddled around the brazier Drinking tinnies and trying to stay warm, Row reappears at 20:00 to announce that he’s ready to turn in for the night so by 20:30 he’s safetly tucked up in his sleeping bag.
By 10:30 I do the same …..
07:30 Sunday 20th – Its -3 deg in the van, we don’t want to get up ! 08:00 and we finally get our act together have some brekkie, get signed on and the bike scruteneered and ready to go.
Practice went fine Rowan cruised round at about 80% effort (so he told me) there are quite a few places that I can see he can pick up the pace a bit, but seeing as its only his second meet on the new bike and he’s still getting to grips with it we just have a little chat about what he thinks he can do.
RACE1
Row pull’s peg 37 for the first race so we are last up to the gate Row gets himself lined up on the inside (not the best place to be), I just remind him to be as smooth as he can.
GO ! – they belt of the line – Row is about 4th to last (out of 35) into the first bend (we haven’t worked on starts yet !), he isn’t confident enough to push is way through like he would if he was still racing the auto. 1st and 2nd laps are despatched without any drama and Row is gradually getting faster , he picks up one or two places during the laps then comes across a rider who he used to battle against last year , this developes into a good race between them as Row manages to get past on one of the faster sections only to be got back into one of the hairpin bends, they continue to circulate into the last lap. I can see that row is getting really eager to pass, two bends to go and Row and Charlie come steaming up the back straight, into a slippery uphill bend, they both lock the back brakes into it and the pair of them are broadside, Row on the inside and Charlie on the outside, Row slides to the point of no return as Charlie struggles to get it turned into the bend, Row hits the throttle but its too late and the bike slides from under him, he picks it up quickly jumps back on and finishes the race. Both Row and Charlie really enjoyed the race and are having a good chat about it as they queue to get off of the track.
RACE 2 Row finished in 28th place so we are not to dis-heartened, he had a good race and his confidence is now much higher than before,
The race itself pretty much followed the pattern of the first one but this time its Charlie who dumps it at the second to last bend ! allowing Row to take the place Two races down and one to go Row is credited with 29th place in this one.
LAST RACE, This time I go through the start procedure we perfected last year (its called nasty boy) I get Row well fired up ready for the start, it involves getting him screaming to himself and me holding the chin piece of his lid telling him to do em !, Row flies off the line up the inside of the pack and muscles himself into the group for about 15th place, he holds this position for the first two laps despite being hounded by a big group of riders, then he squares off an uphill corner and catches a jump wrong, despite wrestling with the bike he falls off and is immediately rammed by a following rider, Row falls and the bike lands on top of him pinning him under it, I run over (luckily I happened to be standing close) and pick’s the bike up, he jumps up and with tears in his eyes tell me he has hurt his back, He is standing O.K so I ask him if he want to carry on, he yells at me YES ! so I kick the bike into life as Row jumps on, and away he goes… now in last place he is quickly lapped by the leaders but he’s lapping quicker than he has all day, he picks up 5 places during the last two laps and finishes just behind his arch rival – Charlie .. I run up to the track exit to meet him where he gives me the thumbs up, when he gets back to the van I whip off his body armour and check him over – he’s fine, but I am so glad I bought some new body armour incorporating a back protector because its just saved him from what may have been a serious injury the pain he felt was from the back protector doing its job and not from the bike that hit him !.
Row jumps back on his BMX bike and disappears whilst I pack up the van and all the gear and get ready to drive home, Row checks the results and is quite pleased that despite the fall he finished in 27th place.
So we are very happy with our days efforts,, bearing in mind that this year is meant to be a build up year ready for a proper assalt on the Junior championship next year we are pleased
With Row’s progress so far. |
