my battery died shortly after i put on the highbeam,
thankfully i was only about 10 blocks away from home and rolled the bike back..
funny thing is a total of 3 (THREE) dudes yelled out at traffic lights as i was rolling the bike past them, what kind it was.
id say 'MZ' and their responce was 'Sharp looking bike'! and other similar.
with out even a hint of sarcasm _________________ 2002 MZ 125SM |

well the day before i rolled out with an almost full battery, and rode for about 4-5 hours. the next day, i had problems starting (?). i tried untill the starter started clicking, which didnt take long at all.
i charged it up for about 45 minutes, and figured id charge the rest during riding. 30-40 minutes into it and shortly after using the high beam, approaching a stop sign, i pulled in the clutch lever and rolled off the throttle in preparation for braking...
i rolled to a stop in complete silence, the engine stalled.
starting it up was a little bit problematic, as if the rpm wasnt enough for idling, the engine kept stalling, so i kept the throttle open a litle and rolled away. on the next stop sign half a mile away, the engine stalled again, this time for good.
it doesnt look like the battery is charged fast enough to compensate for the spent juice on lights.
i imagine on any other bike the 5 hour ride from the day before would have generated plenty of juice for the following, or am i wrong? _________________ 2002 MZ 125SM |

i remember reading a year ago or so, about someone from malaysia complaining of his 125sm 'killing' two batteries in a row. after some time of use, they would drain, and charging them would simply generate 'trouble' lights in chargers.
my bike actually already did kill one battery in exact same manner 3 months ago, i wonder if its some kind of a chronic problem.
has your bike drained the battery before? have you ever had to replace it? _________________ 2002 MZ 125SM |

no, still on the original battery, but remember, the 660 is completely Yamaha. is your headlamp bulb stock? have you checked all the fuses yet? _________________ 2001 MZ Black Panther

phlat i think you misread my responce to jbthumper.
my responce to you is above that one.
everything on this bike is stock, i'll check the fuses tonight.
p.s. how do i tell if the fuse is blown, do they look charred/melted? _________________ 2002 MZ 125SM |

sorry. you can see the small "s" inside of the fuse will be broken. also look for discoloration of any connector housings (white ones will have dark melty spots around the terminal) indicating a bad connection. _________________ 2001 MZ Black Panther

I dunno if this is helpful info or not... but on the second day I had my bike, it was hard to start when hot, it actually popped one of the 20A fuses, and would NOT start unless I fiddled with the throttle a little and it turned over REALLY slowly and I was thinking "electrical problem" til I checked the oil... mine was over-full by about 1/2 quart and draining the extra back out of the motor solved all of my trouble.
I rode around for a few hours yesterday in the daylight with the high-beam on, and an hour or two after dark with the low-beam and it all seems fine - but then again, I've only had the bike for less than a week... |

oil level is spot on the marker...
but this gives me an idea.
i know oil and filters have to be changed every spring,
but i bought this bike right before winter, and put on less than 5 miles on it before ithad to go in for warranty servicing. so i didnt bother changing when i got it back and rolled out this spring.
but, this bike also spent over a year on the showroom floor of its original dealer.
could have this time of non-use afected the oil & filters in some way?
could replacing the oil and filters help the electrical problems any? _________________ 2002 MZ 125SM |

If you're not having hot-start problems, or other symptoms of excessive crankcase-pressure, then I cannot imagine that changing the oil would change anything - but if you're gonna do it anyway, it sure won't hurt anything. |

Bro, i don't think changing the oil will do anything also.
But if the second battery goes dead, maybe it's not charging.
125Smash have u tried testing your bike with a volt meter to see if it's charging???My bike never drained batteries like that....but my battery only last a year max.
About that article on a guy who "killed" 2 batteries.....i don't know....sounds a little fishy...it's not likely to happen....unless there is some sort of short-circuit in that wiring.
anyway, test it ya! |
