always check fuze with a load some times they look good
but and ohm meter also lies
use a bulb and battery to check them
the oem battries were crap see keith's post below
and the replacement
by someone else later may not be much better
it may show 12volts or more but has no guts when cranking
my bikes run from the main battery and i crank from a second battery
mounted in a saddle bag both are charged by the bike but are seperate

I'm having the same problem, failed on the way home tonight, running ok, hit the turn signal and the whole bikeshut down (not fun in the dark)
started straight away after. . .
Also the bike occasionally stalls shortly after starting, letting it run for a while then switch the lights on and it dies, try it again and its ok. . .
possibly related to the left hand switch gear, lights / indicator etc. . . ?
all fuses are ok. . .
given it a good dose of ACF50

Check your battery, the ones MZ supply are about as reliable as the Titanics return voyage.

i have ran into many weird problems on bike electric
check the lugs on both posative and negative wires at the battery
and the ground wire some thing has come loose or maybe a break
inside 1 of the wires i would look at the ground wires from battery to motor first and 1 time the ground lug to wire connection was bad
it's a bit hard to trouble shoot one 3000miles away the leads on the
volt meter are way toooo short
when you find it let me know what it was so i know where tell others to look next time _________________ Dave 2002 MZ RT125+95 Saxon Tour in WV USA "I like the road less traveled if it's PAVED!."

disconnect and clean the ignition switch connector. terminal corrosion can be funny, it will carry the load until that little bit extra, then go open. all the current goes through the switch, would be best to convert to a load reduction relay system. I will look at the wiring diagram and come up with a detailed conversion... _________________ 2001 MZ Black Panther

If I may add.....I'm not familiar with those bikes, but I would assume that behind the headlight/under the gauges you have various harness plug connectors? You may want to pull each one at a time....and check/clean the terminals. Sounds like main power is being intermitantly cut off to the ignition switch. Have you ridin it in the rain at all? Or previous owner?
On my Laverda I had a similar problem. Was running fine. Came to a stop, turned off for a while, went to start and no power what-so-ever. Turned the handlebars hard left and right for the hell of it and I got power back. Started pulling the plugs and found two terminals with some corrosion. Cleaned them and problem fixed. |

Nice to have some advice, going to take ignition switch to pieces, but still need question answering about fuses!!!!.The whole wiring loom to say the bike is only 5 years old looks trashed.Tried a different battery so eliminated that. Its a pity your voltmeter leads wont stretch!!!!!! .Spoke to bike dealers in sheffield, tell them what problem is then what type of bike and wait for them to burst out laughing, what bike? an MZ sorry m8 can"t get parts for that.please keep offering advice guys. |

You need to find some bike dealers who know something about bikes!!
Tell them its got a Yamaha XTZ660 Engine in it, and theyĺl soon find the parts you need!
As for the electrics, I m going to look over mine tonight as the indicators have stopped flashing, I might find the info you need.

if your close to sheffield try going to pleasley motorcyles (mz dealer) near mansfield
http://www.pleasleymotorcycles.co.uk/index.htm
VERY good for advice and spares. . .
on further investigation on my baggy cutting out , i think it might be the ignition relay.. or possibly the ignition barrel
its ok with the lights off, but put them on and everything cuts out (sometimes) then the neutral light has been flickering too. . .
will keep you posted and hopefully we will get them sorted ! _________________ two wheels good, four wheels bad. . . . |

This sounds like the problem I had this summer. Turned out to be the wires connected to the ignition switch. They finally broke off on Salisbury Plain, while have a little sorty on my own while others on teh ride out had a break. I had to fit a new switch in the end. Still at least you only have to replace the electrical part that ataches to the ignition switch barrel. BSA Regal had one in stock. Ordered one morning and the new one arived in the post the next day.
Check the wires where they are soldered to the switch first though.

Hi Guys found the fault. It turns out to be the ignition switch, stripped the wires back past to where they pass the frame. The red power lead that comes off had got chopped, reconnected and HEY PRESTO, all working again.Going to replace the wires properly with better quality stuff so it wont happen again. Thanks for all your replies, will use this site regularly from now on and all you people have a safe christmas
