When i was a little they were great about 1955 ... my grand mother raised them and made all kinds of stuff from them ...
the ones i like were called BEEFSTAKES and were great stright up
take a bite out of one and sprinkle canning salt on it and eat it like a big apple but these things were the size of a grapefruit
i raise then even today but the store bought stuff is nasty and i very seldom use them
in the winter we eat ones we have canned from the summer in stews and chilis
and a friend makes some into mexican salsa
if you can find a seed place in the UK that sells BEEFSTEAK type
get some seed and try them in a big flower box up on the roof so some one does not NICK the whole crop
and try one just befor it is ripe but still green ...sliced up geeen and fried rolled in flour taste is like fried okra rolled in flower and fried in olive oil...
red neck country cookin at its best
now where is the one i picked today you guys made me hungry
http://www.seedfest.co.uk/seeds/tomatoes/red/red.html#redbeefsteak
check this one out to home grow them .....in the uk i may order some for next year as the seed i have been getting here is not to great of late
ar dave

yes. yegh. expensive and they're tasteless.
we have some (mostly only indian shops and for indian cooking) called jam tomatoes. they're small and ..sort of long, not round. they have some taste. i only use them.

I love tomatoes. I would almost go as far to say that I couldn't live without tomatoes.
Tomato Ketchup - gotta have it with chips, fish fingers, burgers, cheese on toast, eggs, sausages...
Pizza - you need that tomato sauce on top of the base before the basil mozzarella, pepperoni, anchovies and olives go on!
Without tomatoes I would never be able to eat spaghetti bolognaise, chilli, meatballs, steak and ale pie, lots of types of curries...
Damn - all this talk of food is making me hungry. Time for a cheese and tomato ketchup toastie or 4

while we are cooking
some thing to eat while wasteing time and beer
take a flour tortilla for you guys in the UK its a flat bread about 1/8 inch thick
cover with olive oil both sides and place on a baking sheet pan
cover with tomato sause and pepperoni and cheese (or ground beef crumble)and cheese options include onion and/or crisp bacon (pan cook bacon first)
bake 10 to 12 min in 400 deg f oven
make a lunch size pizza some folks here call them a crispie
been making them for 40 some years its a super thin pizza
and good

Dave dude, that sounds awesome...mmmmm Although i hate Tommy'o'toes straight, i do eat tomatoe sauce, bollocknaise, pizza and all that stuff. I just can't eat tomatoes in their original condition, makes me wanna hurl big time! My mates tried to stitch me up once and stuck tommies in my barbecued roll of meaty goodness, needless to say under first tongue detection of the red alien in my mouth it was immediately sprayed across them. Although everyone was in absolute hysterics i was not THAT ammused to say the least, those fat gits had eaten all the other food and i had to pick the pips n mushy alien internals outta my french stick!
